Auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Connecticut. You must carry your insurance card in your vehicle and show it upon request by a law enforcement officer. Insurance companies are required to report to the state all new or terminated insurance polices. If you fail to respond or your insurance company does not attest to your coverage, your registration may be suspended or you can pay a civil penalty of $200 in lieu of the suspension. Failure to correct the suspension within 30 days could cause your driver's license to be suspended. You must carry your insurance information or other proof of financial responsibility in the vehicle at all times. If you fail to do so, you will be subject to a $ 35 fine for the first offense and up to a $ 50 fine for subsequent offenses. Additional fees may apply.
Connecticut state law requires a minimum coverage of 20/40/10 for Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability. This means drivers must carry $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury liability and $10,000 per accident for property damage liability. Residents are also required to carry Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage of at least $20,000 per person up to a total of $40,000 per accident. While these are the state required minimum coverage amounts, you should strongly consider higher limits. Most experts agree and recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.
Connecticut uses a fault-based or tort system of insurance. With a tort based system, the at-fault party's insurance company will pay medical and rehabilitation expenses of the injured party. The injured party also has the right to sue for other losses including pain and suffering. To adequately protect yourself from financial loss, consider carrying more coverage than the law requires.
